Studies on Streptococcus Pyogenes
Electron microscopic observations of Streptococcus pyogenes (strain S43, type 6) treated with trypsin and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (Cetab) are presented. The concentration of trypsin necessary to remove the M protein antigen was shown to bring about a partial digestion of the cells. The cell protoplasm and protoplasmic membrane were affected. No microscopic changes appeared in the cell wa...
متن کاملMolecular epidemiology of sil locus in clinical Streptococcus pyogenes strains.
Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus [GAS]) causes a wide variety of diseases, ranging from mild noninvasive to severe invasive infections. Mutations in regulatory components have been implicated in the switch from colonization to invasive phenotypes. The inactivation of the sil locus, composed of six genes encoding a quorum-sensing complex, gives rise to a highly invasive strain. Howe...
متن کاملEmergence of macrolide-resistant Streptococcus pyogenes strains in French children.
We studied the antimicrobial susceptibility of 322 Streptococcus pyogenes throat isolates from French children and their serotype and genomic diversity. A total of 22.4% were erythromycin resistant, and 69.4, 4.2, and 26.4% of these isolates harbored ermB, ermA, and mefA, respectively. Increasing resistance in France is mainly associated with a few emm type 28 clones.
متن کاملTyping of Streptococcus pyogenes strains using the phage profiling method
We recently developed a method that allows fast differentiation between Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) strains. The method named phage profiling (PP) is based on a simple assumption that a regular PCR reaction with Taq polymerase and relatively short elongation time is not able to yield long DNA fragment, such as ~40-50 kb integrated prophage. Only fragments without any integrated DNA or short fr...
متن کاملStreptococcus pyogenes ( Group A Streptococcus )
Group A streptococcus (GAS) is synonymous with Streptococcus pyogenes, the only species within this group of β-hemolytic streptococci. GAS is one of the leading pathogenic bacteria that infects children and adolescents, and is associated with a wide spectrum of infections and disease states. Worldwide, there are estimated to be >600 million cases of GAS pharyngitis (“strep throat”) and >100 mil...
